Visit of Ms Jacqui Smith, Home Secretary of the United Kingdom

Ms Jacqui Smith, Home Secretary of the UK, met and discussed with 10 students of Bahçeşehir University on Monday, January 5, 2009.Ms Smith answered questions of students in the meeting. The activity was within the
the scope of our project that was planned a while ago, when Ms David Miliband, Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, had visited Bahçeşehir University and that has been carried out successfully since then. After that conversation of about half an hour, a reception was held with participation of academic staff and a committee from the British Consulate in Istanbul.
According to Ms Smith, the most crucial function of unity is to take the important step towards annihilating the mentality that poisons and isolates women and towards setting free their full potential by fighting extremism.
Ms Smith put a strong emphasis on the fact that the UK and Turkey should work together in this respect. Defining the program carried out at Bahçeşehir University as “highly commendable”, Ms Smith finished her speech with these words about the students of Bahçeşehir University: “We would not need such a program in an ideal world but until that day comes we do need every single method we can utilize. I am sure that the capable, learned, confident young people I have met here today will be successful representatives of your country, as well as of your university, and that they will undertake an important role in fighting extremism and terrorism.”
